Is Jantar Mantar still fit for protests, Supreme Court wants answers

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Central government and the Delhi government over an important public interest litigation that asked for an alternative protest site instead of Jantar Mantar. The petition said Jantar Mantar is no longer suitable for protests because it causes inconvenience to the general public.

The petition was filed by Satish Chand Kaushik through Aakarshan Aditya. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana also issued notices to the Delhi Police Commissioner and the New Delhi Municipal Council.

CJI calls issue important seeks government’s response

During the hearing Chief Justice Surya Kant said the petition pointed out that Jantar Mantar is no longer an appropriate protest site because of problems related to entry and exit and the movement of essential services including medical supplies. Calling the issue important the Chief Justice asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to take instructions. The court issued notices and directed that the matter be listed separately for further hearing.

Advocate Aakarshan Aditya appearing for the petitioner also told the Supreme Court that Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal had called a town hall meeting and decided to march towards the Prime Minister’s residence. He said another incident like the one on July 20 should be avoided.

Recent Jantar Mantar demonstration adds context to court hearing

Responding to the submission Chief Justice Surya Kant said the authorities know how to deal with the situation. He added that if they fail to handle it properly the court can be approached over any mishandling. The court then directed that the matter be listed separately for further hearing.

Recently the Cockroach Janata Party organised a large protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over the alleged irregularities in the NEET UG paper leak. Thousands of students also joined the demonstration.

Clashes and resignation mark turning point in protest

On July 20 clashes broke out between the protesters and Delhi Police during the CJP’s Sansad Chalo march. The protesters accused the police of using excessive force while Delhi Police denied the allegations.

On July 25 the Cockroach Janata Party ended the protest after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as the Union Education Minister.
