Schools, colleges closed in parts of Karnataka as heavy rain triggers red and orange alerts
New Delhi: Educational institutions in several parts of Karnataka will remain closed on August 3 as heavy rainfall continues across the state’s Malnad and coastal regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued downpours, prompting district administrations to declare precautionary holidays.
In Uttara Kannada district, an orange alert has been issued, following which holidays have been declared for anganwadis and schools in Dandeli and Joida taluks. District authorities said the decision was taken as a precaution against possible rain-related incidents.
In Shivamogga district, continuous heavy rain in Sagar taluk has led authorities to declare a holiday for anganwadis, schools and colleges. The local administration has also activated a 24-hour control room to respond to emergencies caused by the rainfall.
Heavy rain has also prompted authorities in Chikkamagaluru district to suspend classes in anganwadis and schools in Koppa and Sringeri taluks. With the Tunga River flowing above the danger mark, District Commissioner Bhanwar Singh Meena has advised people to stay away from riverbanks.
In Dakshina Kannada district, holidays have been announced for educational institutions depending on the severity of rainfall in different taluks. Anganwadis and schools up to the high school level will remain closed in Mangaluru, Ullal, Moodbidri, Bantwal and Mulki. In Puttur, Belthangady, Kadaba and Sullia taluks, holidays have been declared for institutions from anganwadis up to the pre-university level.
The IMD has also issued a red alert for Shivamogga district, where persistent rainfall has disrupted normal life. The situation has turned tragic in Tirthahalli, where three members of a family lost their lives after a retaining wall and a hillside collapsed in Indira Nagar.
Authorities have warned that the Tunga River continues to swell, raising the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. With heavy rainfall expected to continue over the coming days, district administrations have urged residents to remain alert and follow official advisories.
