Gujarat: Red alert in Ahmedabad, IMD warns of extremely heavy rains in coming days

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department on Thursday issued a red alert for Ahmedabad and several other districts of Gujarat. They have warned that extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong winds, would be witnessed in several parts of the state between July 30 to August 2, 2026.

The weather department said that multiple active weather systems would together trigger widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across the state over the next few days.

The IMD has in fact forecast light to moderate rainfall across Gujarat, till August 5, reported the Republic. While rains are expected to continue till August 5, the most intense spell would be between July 30 to August 2.

Red alert issued in Gujarat

The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by squally winds in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Anand, Narmada, Chhota Udepur, Bhavnagar, Botad, Bharuch, Valsad, Surat, Tapi, Dang and Navsari.

The Director of IMD Gujarat said that rains and extreme winds would continue for the next week at least. Extremely heavy rains are likely in isolated pockets of the state between July 30 to August 2.

The weather department warned residents to be alert. The Surat Municipal Corporation also issued a separate rain alert in view of the forecast by the weather office. As strong winds are anticipated, the municipal corporation has started inspecting hoardings, lowering high-mast street lights and closing certain roads which are likely to be inundated due to rains. These could prove dangerous and may become the cause of accidents, said the municipal commissioner of the city.

The IMD said that a deep depression over west-central Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas of Vidarbha and southeast Madhya Pradesh moved west-southwestwards during the past six hours. It is expected to move further westwards, and bring extremely heavy rains to Gujarat and some other parts of the country as well. It would then eventually weaken into a depression.
