Delhi tragedy: Went to update Aadhaar at bank, guard’s gun misfires, killing man
New Delhi: A tragic incident took place on Tuesday morning at a Union Bank branch in the Jafarpur Kalan area of southwest Delhi. A 27 year old man died after he was allegedly hit by a bullet that was accidentally fired from a security guard’s gun while he had come to the bank to update his Aadhaar card. The incident created panic inside the bank. Police have arrested the security guard and started an investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Manish Kumar a farmer from Issapur village. He is survived by his elderly parents and five elder sisters. According to his family Manish had gone to the bank only to update his Aadhaar card but what began as a routine visit ended in a tragic accident.
Bank staff rush to help after sudden gunshot
Police said the incident happened at around 10.30 am on Tuesday July 28. The security guard Vinod Kumar who is 53 years old was loading cartridges into his 12 bore double barrel gun when it suddenly went off. The bullet hit Manish Kumar in the back causing him to collapse and creating panic among people inside the bank.
After hearing the gunshot bank staff and customers rushed to the spot. They found Manish lying on the ground with serious injuries and covered in blood. He was immediately taken to Rao Tularam Hospital but doctors declared him dead after examining him.
Police probe begins after guard’s account emerges
Delhi Police said they received a PCR call about the incident at around 11.06 am. The caller informed them that a bank security guard’s gun had gone off and a man had been seriously injured. By the time police reached the bank the injured man had already been taken to the hospital.
During questioning security guard Vinod Kumar told police that he had reported late for duty that day. He said he was loading cartridges into the gun after the bank had already opened and customers and staff had entered the premises. According to him the gun fired accidentally because of negligence or a technical problem.
Forensic probe begins as police seize guard’s gun
Police said Vinod Kumar is a resident of Majri village in Haryana’s Jhajjar district. He served in the Indian Army and retired in 2018. For the last two years he had been working as a security guard at the bank through a private security agency. He has two sons one studying for an MD degree and the other pursuing MBBS.
As part of the investigation police seized the gun used in the incident and sent it for forensic examination. Manish Kumar’s post mortem has also been completed. Officials are waiting for the post mortem and forensic reports to determine the exact circumstances of the firing.
Police scan CCTV after arresting security guard
Police have also collected CCTV footage from cameras installed inside the bank. Investigators are checking whether all security procedures were followed and whether loading the weapon after the bank had opened amounted to serious negligence.
Police have registered a case against the security guard under the relevant legal provisions and arrested him. Further action will be taken after the investigation and forensic reports are received.
