Deep depression over eastern India brings heavy rain; North Bengal to see increased showers

New Delhi: The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and is currently positioned over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, bringing widespread rainfall to both states.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, rainfall is expected to increase across North Bengal, while weather conditions are likely to improve gradually in South Bengal from Wednesday. On Tuesday, scattered showers are expected over the western districts of the state, with light to moderate rain likely in Kolkata and adjoining areas.

The weather department’s morning bulletin stated that the deep depression was centred around 10 km southeast of Baripada in Odisha, about 40 km north-northwest of Balasore, and approximately 80 km southwest of Medinipur in West Bengal. Over the next 24 hours, the system is expected to move west-northwest across northern Odisha, southern Jharkhand and northern Chhattisgarh, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to these regions.

Meanwhile, restrictions remain in place at Digha due to rough sea conditions and strong winds. Although many tourists had travelled to the seaside destination, they have been unable to enter the sea because of safety restrictions and have had to enjoy the coastline from behind the guardrails.

The deep depression crossed into West Bengal near Contai in Purba Medinipur on Monday afternoon after moving inland from the Odisha coast. Its impact is expected to keep weather conditions unsettled across the state for much of the week.

The weather office has also forecast heavy rainfall over the five northernmost districts of North Bengal, urging residents to remain cautious as the system continues to influence weather across the region.
