Report claims China deploys J-20 Sealth Fighters near Indian Border

New Delhi: China has reportedly deployed its advanced J-20 “Mighty Dragon” stealth fighter jets near India’s northern border, according to a media report citing recent satellite imagery. The report claims that multiple J-20 aircraft have been stationed at airbases close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.

According to the report, at least 11 J-20 fighter jets were deployed across two key airbases between late June and early July. Satellite imagery dated 9 July reportedly shows seven J-20 aircraft parked together at Hotan Air Base in Xinjiang. The base is located close to the Indian border, approximately 389 km from Leh and about 245 km from the Indian Air Force’s Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) airstrip.

Defence analysts say the deployment highlights the People’s Liberation Army Air Force’s (PLAAF) growing capability to operate stealth aircraft from high-altitude bases. They believe the presence of fifth-generation fighters near the northern border presents a new operational challenge for the Indian Air Force. However, the Indian Air Force has not issued an official statement on the reported deployment.

The J-20 is China’s fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft, designed with a low radar signature that makes it difficult to detect. Owing to its stealth features, it is widely regarded as more advanced than many fourth-generation fighter aircraft currently in service.

India is simultaneously developing its own fifth-generation stealth fighter under the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, although the project is still in the development phase. At present, the Indian Air Force operates 36 Rafale fighter jets, more than 260 Su-30MKI aircraft, along with Mirage 2000 and MiG-29 fighters. Discussions are also underway to procure an additional 114 Rafale aircraft.

Defence analysts further note that China’s J-20 fleet has expanded rapidly in recent years. Estimates suggest the country currently operates between 300 and 500 J-20 aircraft, with projections indicating the fleet could continue to grow significantly over the coming years.
