13 years after Test debut, Mohammed Shami announces retirement from longest format

New Delhi: Veteran India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket on November 6. Shami played 64 Test matches for India and took 229 wickets at a brilliant average of 27.71, including six five-wicket hauls. His last appearance in the longest format came in the 2023 World Test Championship final, where India suffered a defeat to Australia at The Oval.

Exactly 13 years ago, the Bengal pacer made his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens on the same day he retired from the format. Shami delivered a sensational performance on his debut and picked up 9 wickets.

Although he was particularly effective with reverse swing in subcontinental conditions, the pacer established himself as a crucial member of the Indian bowling attack in overseas conditions. With four of his six five-wicket hauls coming in Australia and South Africa.

“Today, with a heavy heart and countless beautiful memories, I am taking the decision to retire from Test cricket. A thank you to every teammate, coach, family member, and crores of Indians who supported me throughout this journey and kept their faith in me during the good and tough times,” Shami wrote in a social media post late on Friday (November 6).
