C.T. Ravi refuses police notice in hate speech case; BJP workers protest outside Chikkamagaluru residence

New Delhi: Tension prevailed outside the residence of BJP MLC C.T. Ravi in Chikkamagaluru on Saturday after police arrived to serve him a notice in connection with an FIR registered over alleged derogatory remarks.

A team led by Chikkamagaluru Town Police Inspector Abhay Prakash visited Ravi’s residence to issue the notice, directing him to appear before investigators at 11 a.m. on July 27. However, Ravi refused to accept the notice, following which police pasted it on the wall of his house.

The move triggered protests from BJP workers gathered at the residence. Party supporters tore down the notice and raised slogans against the police, accusing them of acting with political bias.

Speaking to police, Ravi denied that his speech contained any remarks targeting a particular community or promoting hatred.

“There is nothing in my speech that insults or incites hatred against any community. I was referring to a person who came to create unrest. Where in the FIR does it say I insulted the Muslim community? The word ‘religion’ does not even appear in my speech. Does the term ‘Mulla’ automatically mean ‘Muslim’? I was referring to an individual, and I will continue to say the same,” Ravi said.

BJP workers also questioned the police over what they described as selective action, claiming that complaints filed by the party against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had not received similar attention.

Responding to the protesters, Inspector Abhay Prakash clarified that officers had only come to serve a notice and were not attempting to arrest Ravi.

“We have come only to issue a notice. We are not here to make an arrest. The matter will be investigated,” the officer said.

As the protest intensified, police personnel were surrounded by BJP workers. Before leaving the spot, Inspector Prakash expressed displeasure over the obstruction, stating that officials were being prevented from performing their lawful duties.

The FIR against Ravi was registered on Saturday at the Chikkamagaluru Town Police Station following a complaint filed by Mudasir Pasha, president of the Jamia Committee. The complaint alleges that Ravi made hate speech while commenting on protests held across the country, including in New Delhi, over the alleged NEET examination paper leak.

Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
