Mirabai Chanu clinches 3rd successive gold at Commonwealth Games with record-breaking show
New Delhi: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu shattered multiple records to clinch India’s first gold medal at the on Sunday, July 26. Mirabai lifted a record total of 190kg in snatch and clean & jerk combined in the women’s 48kg category to win the elusive gold medal. She clinched her third successive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, having finished on the top of the podium in the last two editions.

While she was always the favourite for gold in women’s 48kg weightlifting, it was a night of domination from Mirabai, who broke not one but three records on her way to winning her third straight Commonwealth Games gold medal with a total lift of 190kg. The 31-year-old failed in her first attempt in both snatch and clean & jerk categories, but bounced back strongly to blow away the competition.
Record-breaking night for Mirabai Chanu at CWG 2026
After missing her first attempt, Mirabai lifted an impressive 85kg in the snatch round to set a new Commonwealth Games record in the women’s 48kg category. The Olympic medallist then cleared 105kg in her second attempt in the clean & jerk round to create another Commonwealth Games record.
She lifted 190kg overall to win the gold medal and set another Commonwealth Games record for the highest combined weight lifted by any athlete in the women’s 48kg category. Nigeria’s Ruth Asuqo Nyong finished second with a total lift of 168kg, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry took the bronze medal with a total lift of 167kg.

A three-time champion now, Mirabai created history by becoming the first weightlifter in the Commonwealth Games to win a hat-trick of gold medals. The weightlifter from Manipur started her Commonwealth Games journey with a silver medal in the 2014 edition in Glasgow. Life came full circle for her in the same city on Sunday as she won her third successive gold medal in the competition.
With her record-breaking show, Mirabai bagged India’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 and joined Rishikanta Singh in becoming the second weightlifter to win a medal for the country at the ongoing edition. Mirabai has won four medals, including three gold in the Commonwealth Games and will be eyeing a gold medal at the Asian Games 2026 next.
