Sam Altman is now ‘Ram Altman’ on X, and the reason has the internet laughing

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has changed his name on X (formerly Twitter) to “Ram Altman”, and the internet is having a good laugh. The name change happened on November 4, following a rather unusual controversy involving computer memory, AI data centres and the amount of RAM people should have in their PCs. For someone running one of the world’s biggest AI companies, Altman has found himself at the centre of a meme about something as ordinary as computer hardware.

The joke began after Altman’s comments on the Cheeky Pint podcast, where he questioned whether keeping large amounts of RAM in personal computers was an efficient use of limited memory supplies. His argument was that memory could be used more efficiently in data centres serving multiple users. PC enthusiasts were understandably unimpressed. After all, nobody particularly enjoys being told their computer has too much RAM.

How did Sam Altman become Ram Altman?

It started with an X user named Harshith, who posted a meme appearing to lure Altman using RAM sticks.

Altman replied, “i lol’d”.

Another user then asked him to change his X display name to Ram Altman.

His response was short: “ok yeah”.

And he actually did it. His account, @sama, subsequently displayed the name “Ram Altman”.

Why are people angry about his RAM comments?

RAM, or Random Access Memory, helps computers run applications, games and other tasks smoothly.

AI companies are buying enormous amounts of memory for their data centres, increasing competition for hardware supplies.

Altman’s comments were interpreted by some users as suggesting that consumer computers should have less memory.

Elon Musk joined the discussion, posting, “The people deserve to have their RAM too!”

What is Ram Altman saying now?

Altman has pushed back against criticism, arguing that people misunderstood his original remarks.

Responding to a user on X, he wrote, “i want you to have so much ram” and “lets build more”.

He said he had been arguing for increased memory production for a long time and wanted people to install as much memory as they liked in their computers.

For now, Sam has become Ram, and a serious discussion about memory shortages has somehow turned into one of tech Twitter’s stranger jokes of the week.
