‘The club needed that win’: Bruno Fernandes reacts as Man United end 9-game winless run

New Delhi: ended their nine-game winless run with a 3-2 comeback victory against Roma at Old Trafford. After the win, captain Bruno Fernandes said that the players don’t need to save anyone’s job, adding that the club needed that victory.

Roma midfielder Matias Soule scored the opening goal of the match in the 11th minute, before Donyell Malen doubled their lead from the penalty spot seven minutes later. The hosts then began their fightback when captain Bruno Fernandes scored a retaken penalty in the 58th minute.

Cunha then turned the match in United’s favour, scoring the equaliser in the 83rd minute. The Brazilian forward netted again just three minutes later to help Manchester United complete the turnaround and spark jubilant celebration at Old Trafford.

Cunha then transformed the contest, equalising seven minutes from time before scoring again three minutes later to complete the turnaround and spark jubilant celebrations at Old Trafford. He was then booked for removing his shirt and jumping into the stands after his winning goal, and was sent off for a late challenge in stoppage time, completing a chaotic eight-minute spell.

‘We don’t need to save anyone’s job’

Fernandes was dropped by Carrick for the Bournemouth game following his criticism of the manager’s tactics after a 4-1 defeat to Como. However, after the victory over Roma, the midfielder admitted that the head coach was right to discipline him by leaving him out of the team.

“It’s been tough, there’s been a lot of speculation in the media. A lot of lies around many things that have happened between me and the manager, that we have cleared the air, then after that the manager took the decision to put me on the bench because I’m not performing,” Fernandes told Amazon Prime.

“Everyone thought that was a punishment for the words that I had. If it was, it was right. The manager is the one who makes the decisions. It doesn’t change the belief I have of the manager and the staff and every player in this club. “And it doesn’t change my aim to win every game that I have ahead of me,” he added.

The Man United captain also rejected the suggestion that defeating Roma would help save Carrick’s job. The Red Devils are placed 17th in the Premier League and Champions League standings.

“We don’t need to save anyone’s job. The club needed that win, the players needed that win. We have been working so hard to get out of this situation all together,” he said.

Man United will next take on in the Premier League on Sunday, November 8.
