Virat Kohli scripts history, becomes 1st batter in world to complete 13,000 runs as no.3 in ODIs
New Delhi: Team India superstar etched his name in history as he became the first player in the world to complete 13,000 runs in ODIs as a no.3 batter. Kohli achieved the milestone during the first ODI between India and at Eden Park in Auckland.

Kohli needed only 12 runs in the series opener to complete 13,000 runs as a no.3 batter and managed to do that off 13 balls during India’s 186-run chase in the series opener against the Kiwis. Kohli already leads the elite list of batters with the most runs at no.3 in ODIs.
While Kohli has more than 13,000 runs to his name at no.3 in ODIs, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is in the second spot with 12662 runs in 335 matches. He is followed by Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara, who scored 9747 runs in 243 matches as a no.3 batter in ODIs. Kohli and Ponting are the only two batters with more than 10,000 runs at no.3 in ODIs.
Batters with most runs at no.3 in ODIs:
Virat Kohli – 13,000 runs*
Ricky Ponting – 12,662 runs
Kumar Sangakkara – 9,747 runs
Jacques Kallis – 7,774 runs
Kane Williamson – 6,504 runs
Kohli is the second-highest run-getter of all time in ODIs, behind only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli needs only 75 runs in the ongoing five-match ODI series against New Zealand to break Ponting’s record for most runs against the Kiwis in ODIs. Ponting scored 1971 runs in ODIs against the Black Caps, and Kohli is closing in on his record.
Rain interrupts India’s chase in Auckland
India’s 186-run chase was interrupted twice by rain after a solid start from Kohli and skipper Shubman Gill. After bundling out the visitors for a paltry 185, India lost opener Rohit Sharma on a duck early in the run chase. Gill and Kohli then joined hands to steady the ship and get the visitors back on track during their run chase.
Gill and Kohli steered India to 54/1 in 10.5 overs before rain halted the proceedings in Auckland. The game resumed after more than an hour before rain and bad light halted the proceedings again after just an over. India are currently cruising in the run chase at 64/1 after 12 overs, with Gill and Kohli out in the middle.
However, it remains to be seen if the match will be completed as rain continues to play spoilsport.
