Bengaluru doctor arrested for allegedly assaulting Bangladeshi couple over citizenship dispute

New Delhi: A local doctor has been arrested by the Bellandur Police for allegedly assaulting a Bangladeshi couple after questioning their citizenship in Bengaluru.

The accused has been identified as Dr. Nagendra, who runs Sai Clinic. The arrest was made following a complaint lodged by Nasreena Bilal (23), a Bangladeshi national residing with her husband in Bettadasapura near Whitefield.

According to the complaint, Nasreena and her husband, Mohammad Bilal, a driver by profession, were confronted by Dr. Nagendra over their nationality. The doctor allegedly questioned their citizenship after learning they were from Bangladesh, leading to a heated argument.

The complaint alleges that the verbal altercation escalated into a physical assault, with the doctor attacking the couple.

Based on the complaint, Bellandur Police arrested Dr. Nagendra and produced him before a court, which later granted him bail.

Police officials said preliminary findings suggest the doctor acted out of concern over the reported presence of illegal immigrants in the locality. However, investigators emphasised that taking the law into one’s own hands was unacceptable.

“Even if the couple are Bangladeshi nationals, assaulting them is not justified. Instead of resorting to violence, the doctor should have informed the authorities,” an investigating officer said.

Police are also collecting additional information regarding the couple’s immigration and legal status in India as part of the ongoing investigation.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not disclosed any further details.
