Will Manchester United sack Michael Carrick? Manager reacts after 2-0 defeat against Chelsea

New Delhi: Pressure continues to mount on manager Michael Carrick amid Manchester United’s disastrous run. United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday, extending their winless run to nine matches across all competitions.

The club’s horror run has increased the uncertainty around Carrick’s position as a manager, with United facing the prospect of slipping into the relegation zone in the Premier League. Carrick was asked on Saturday if he expects to be in the job despite United’s 2-0 defeat on Saturday.

The former United midfielder remained optimistic about being in the role. “Yeah,” he said when asked if he expects himself to be in charge of United’s clash against Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The United manager was also questioned over the speculation surrounding his future amid increasing pressure on him. Instead of focusing on job security, Carrick made it clear that he wants to focus on the team’s next assignment and get a result.

“I’m just looking forward to getting the boys ready for midweek now,” said the United manager.

Manchester United started well against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday but lost control in the second half. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead 1-0 in the 50th minute before United defender Lisandro Martinez was sent off, leaving the visitors with ten men on the pitch. Cole Palmer converted a penalty after Martinez’s red card to secure a 2-0 victory for the Blues at home.

Manchester United endure worst run since 1984

United have been winless in their last nine matches across all competitions, which is their worst run since September 1984. United have also been enduring poor form in away matches, having failed to win any of their seven away matches so far this season. This is their worst away record since the club faced relegation in the 1973-74 season.

Having already lost nine games, United cannot afford another slip-up as they prepare to take on Roma in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Tuesday. United will then take on Aston Villa in their next Premier League fixture at home, before locking horns with Liverpool on November 22.
