CSK part ways with Michael Hussey in major coaching shake-up ahead of IPL 2027
New Delhi: have decided to part ways with batting coach Michael Hussey, continuing a major overhaul of their backroom staff ahead of the edition. His exit from the Chennai-based franchise marks the end of an eight-year stint in the coaching role. The Australian batter first joined CSK in 2008 and played for the franchise across six editions.

After retiring from international cricket, Hussey returned to the MS Dhoni-led team as the batting coach in 2018. He played a key role in the franchise’s success, helping CSK to lift IPL titles in 2018, 2021 and 2023 during his coaching tenure. The five-time IPL champions paid an emotional tribute to Hussey while announcing their decision to move on.
“From the very first season in 2008, you have been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings family. Your journey in Yellow has been defined not just by the runs you scored and the players you mentored, but by the dedication, humility, and unwavering commitment you brought to this franchise over the years. Your place in our history will forever remain special, Hussmeister. Once a Super King, always a Super King,” CSK said in a statement on social media.

CSK has appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as head coach after Fleming’s departure. Gareth Batty has also joined CSK as an assistant coach for IPL 2027 after leaving Surrey, where he guided the county side to three successive County Championship titles from 2022 to 2024.
Who else is leaving CSK?
Hussey is not the only key member of CSK’s coaching staff to leave. Bowling coach Eric Simons has also left the franchise after being associated with the team since 2018. He is expected to join former head coach Stephen Fleming’s coaching staff with England’s Test side, while fielding coach James Foster has also left the setup.
CSK have also parted ways with assistant coach Rajiv Kumar, physiotherapist Tommy Simsek and trainer Greg King. The Chennai-based franchise has appointed former India pacer Mohit Sharma as their new bowling coach. The coaching overhaul follows three back-to-back disappointing editions. After winning the IPL title in 2023, CSK have finished fifth in 2024, tenth in 2025 and eighth in 2026.
