LA Olympics cricket qualifiers scheduled for January-February 2028
New Delhi: The men’s and women’s cricket qualifiers for the are scheduled to take place in January and February 2028, while the 2029 final is set to be held in England from June 8 to 12. According to a Cricinfo report, the dates for these events, along with those for the men’s and women’s T20 World Cups in 2028, are included in the global tournaments list shared by cricket’s governing body with its members during a board meeting in Dubai in October.

Overall, 12 men’s, seven women’s and five U-19 tournaments (including qualifiers) are set to take place between 2027 and 2031 ODI World Cups. Initially, the ICC planned to host the Olympics qualifiers in 2027, but shifted those events to early 2028, just six months before the start of the Games. It will be the first Olympics to feature cricket since 1904.
Australia, India, South Africa and Great Britain have already qualified in the women’s category as the highest-ranked eligible teams from their respective continents. Their qualification was determined by their performances at the 2026 T20 World Cup. The top four teams on the ICC T20I rankings as of December 31, 2026, will book spots as the top teams eligible from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania in the men’s category.
Host USA is eligible to book one of the remaining two spots in the men’s and women’s events if they finish in the top 15 of the respective T20I rankings at any time during the qualification period from June 30, 2026 to December 31, 2026. The USA men’s side is currently placed 13th, assuring them of direct qualification for the Olympics, but the women’s team are likely to miss out as per the ICC’s updated qualification guidelines.
If USA Women, currently ranked 19th, failed to satisfy the criteria to qualify as hosts for the 2028 Games, then the fifth spot will be awarded based on the standings in the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy, which is set to be played in India in February 2027.
“If the host (USA) does not meet the ranking criteria by 31 Dec 2026, that spot is reallocated based on the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 standings (cut-off 1 March 2027),” the ICC stated in the communication to member countries in October.
The ICC has not decided the venues for the men’s and women’s qualifiers, which will be played between the eight nations. The eight sides will include the seven highest-ranked sides (outside automatic qualifiers), and the winner of the Caribbean Regional Qualifier.
