Hyderabad gain upper hand as Tanay claims second straight five-for

Hyderabad: With his second consecutive five-wicket haul of the season (5/63), Hyderabad’s most consistent bowler in recent times helped his team bowl out hosts Andhra for 184 in 63 overs on the second day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match at Mulapadu, Vijayawada, on Monday.

Tanay’s spell helped Hyderabad take a vital first-innings lead of 91 runs. In their second innings, the Mohammed Siraj-led team was comfortably placed at 78 for one in 22.5 overs at stumps, with opener Tanmay Agarwal (49 not out off 72 balls, 4×4) looking in good touch.

Andhra’s batting was apparently not equal to the task after Hyderabad posted 275 in the first innings. Once Siraj struck the first blow by cleaning up opener Abhishek Reddy (5) in the third over, the spin attack led by Tanay dominated the day’s proceedings.

Tanay lured the other opener, Hemanth Reddy (10), out of his crease before wicketkeeper MS Pragnay Reddy stumped him in the 11th over. Hyderabad also benefited from the run-out of one of Andhra’s most consistent batters, Ricky Bhui (28, 3×4), with Tanay again involved in the dismissal, as Andhra slipped to 91 for three in 29.3 overs.

For Andhra, the only batter who showed sound technique and a willingness to stay at the crease was former India Under-19 captain Shaik Rasheed (61 off 114 balls, 8×4). However, Hyderabad’s bowlers never allowed a big partnership to develop and struck at regular intervals.

Tanay trapped Rasheed lbw, bowled Revanth Reddy (12) and later dismissed Venkat Sasikanth (14) and Saurabh Kumar (1) in quick succession to reduce Andhra to 149 for seven.

This was Tanay’s 13th five-wicket haul in his 38th Ranji Trophy match.

Andhra never recovered from those blows and was eventually bowled out for 184, giving Hyderabad a significant psychological advantage.

The other left-arm spinner, G Aniketh Reddy, supported Tanay well with figures of 2/60.

The scores (second day): Hyderabad 275 in 66 overs and 78/1 in 22.5 overs (Tanmay Agarwal 49 not out) vs Andhra 184 in 63 overs (Shaik Rasheed 61, Ricky Bhui 28, SV Rahul 17; Tanay Thyagarajan 5/63, G Aniketh Reddy 2/60).
