WhatsApp could soon open chat links without leaving the app

WhatsApp is developing an in-app browser that could let iPhone users open links without leaving a chat, according to features found in a beta build by specialist tracker WABetaInfo. The option was spotted in WhatsApp beta for iOS 26.41.10.72, distributed through Apple’s TestFlight programme.

The feature is still under development and is not available to beta testers or the wider public. WhatsApp has not announced a release date, so its final design, availability and privacy controls may change before any rollout.

How the WhatsApp browser could work

WABetaInfo says a new setting labelled “In-app browser” would allow links shared in chats to open inside WhatsApp. Users could switch back to their default browser in settings, or choose to open an individual link externally from a menu.

The report says the browser would run separately from the chat interface. It also describes controls to clear cookies and cached data. These details suggest WhatsApp is trying to add convenience while preserving user choice about where links open.

Privacy claims need confirmation

WABetaInfo reports that browsing data would be stored on the device and that WhatsApp and Apple would not be able to see which links users open. Those claims have not been confirmed in a public WhatsApp announcement or support document. Users should therefore wait for official documentation before drawing conclusions about data handling.

WhatsApp already opens some qualifying business links inside the app, according to earlier beta reporting. The newly spotted setting would broaden that behaviour to links shared in chats.
