FSSAI initiates legal action against Dodla Dairy over unsafe milk sample

Bengaluru: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated legal action against Dodla Dairy after a referral laboratory reportedly detected detergent and caustic soda in a sample of its full-cream milk, raising serious concerns over food safety and quality.

The findings have triggered concern among consumers, as milk is a daily staple consumed by people across age groups, including children and the elderly. The development comes amid intensified food safety inspections targeting hotels, sweet shops and food manufacturing companies in several parts of the country.

According to the findings, the initial analysis had classified the Dodla Dairy milk sample as substandard. A subsequent examination by a referral food laboratory reportedly confirmed violations of food safety requirements, including the presence of detergent and caustic soda. The sample was also found to contain milk fat below the prescribed minimum level.

The detection of these substances has raised questions about the quality and safety of the product. Detergents and caustic soda are not permitted ingredients in milk and their presence can indicate adulteration or contamination. Caustic soda is a corrosive chemical that can cause serious harm if ingested, while detergent contamination may also pose health risks.

However, the reported laboratory findings should not be interpreted as proof that every product sold by the company is contaminated. Consumers should check official food safety advisories for information about affected batches and any recall instructions.

The FSSAI is proceeding under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which provides for action against businesses involved in the manufacture or sale of unsafe and substandard food. Legal proceedings and further examination of the matter are expected to establish responsibility for the violations.

The case highlights the importance of regular food testing, strict quality control and effective enforcement of food safety regulations. Authorities have been stepping up inspections ahead of the festive season, when demand for milk-based products and sweets typically rises.

Consumers are advised to purchase milk from reliable sources, check packaging and expiry details, and follow official advisories issued by food safety authorities. Anyone suspecting adulteration can report the matter to the relevant food safety department for investigation.
