Tollywood directors seeking box-office comebacks

Tollywood has seen many directors who transformed the business with a handful of memorable blockbusters, distinctive narratives and star-driven entertainers. Yet, evolving audience preferences and mixed box-office results pose the challenge of how to keep delivering hits for even the most successful filmmakers. Puri Jagannadh, Trivikram Srinivas, Srinu Vaitla, VV Vinayak and Teja are five Tollywood personalities who are now at the crossroads and have the chance to reinvent themselves and reestablish their status in the industry.

Srinu Vaitla, the director behind such films as Venky, Dhee, Ready and Dookudu developed his reputation as a reliable creator of commercial cinema. Srinu’s movies featured an ensemble of standout supports, situational comedy and engaging scripts. A compelling follow-up project will allow Vaitla to revisit the key strengths of his past successes while introducing a fresh concept. Puri Jagannadh became a leading figure in the Telugu film industry, delivering such hits as Pokiri, Idiot and Businessman . His films were full of distinctive characters, rapid-fire dialogues and rebellious spirits, establishing the director as one of the most recognizable names in Tollywood. Yet, recent years saw Jagannadh struggling to deliver satisfying results. The upcoming venture with Vijay Sethupathi will hopefully provide the necessary inspiration to produce another entertaining blockbuster for the regional market. Trivikram Srinivas is a skilled writer and director who transformed his narrative talents into a series of successful movies. The filmmaker’s specialties include showcasing emotionally resonating stories and utilizing an ensemble of notable collaborators. His work on Athadu , Khaleja and Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo saw Srinivas combining drama, comedy and standout performances. With the reported projects featuring Venkatesh and Jr NTR, there is potential to further capitalize on the creative strengths and involve more familiar faces in the new ventures. In order to re-establish his position, the writer-turned-director will have to bring his unique take on an engaging script to the fore.

VV Vinayak’s past pictures such as Aadi, Dil and Tagore were all crowd-pleasing successes, full of high-concept drama, tear-jerking scenes and multiple hero elevations. A well-crafted script combining the classic strengths with new ideas may become a much-needed comeback for the director. Teja is a talented writer and director who gained wider critical acclaim for his work on Chitram , Nuvvu Nenu and Jayam .

The filmmaker’s dedication to exploring youthful relationships and emotional dramas has seen him become a dependable creator of entertaining pictures. A similarly compelling concept applied in the proper fashion may see the writer-director duo capturing the audience’s attention once again.
