‘Jailer 2’: Tiger is back, but what awaits him this time? The Malayali connection adds to the buzz

Veteran star Rajinikanth is returning as the formidable Muthuvel Pandian in ‘Jailer 2,’ one of the most anticipated sequels, with audiences eager to discover what lies ahead for the retired jailer after the events of the first film. As the film gears up for release on Thursday, the biggest question remains: what will bring Tiger back into action this time?

In Nelson Dilipkumar’s 2023 blockbuster ‘Jailer,’ Muthuvel Pandian appeared to be a quiet family man leading an ordinary life. Beneath that unassuming exterior, however, was a formidable figure with a dangerous past and a reputation that commanded fear. When his son Arjun, an assistant commissioner of police, became entangled in a case involving idol smuggling and the criminal network led by Varman, played by Vinayakan, Tiger’s dormant side came alive.

What followed was a high-stakes confrontation that revealed just how far Tiger was willing to go to protect his family and settle scores. The film also explored the complicated relationship between father and son, who becomes part of the nexus.

With Varman defeated, ‘Jailer 2’ now has the task of taking the story forward without losing the elements that made the first film a hit. Suraj Venjaramoodu and Hakkim Shah too play pivotal roles in the movie, alongside SJ Suryah.

The Kerala pre-sales figures suggest that interest in Rajinikanth’s return is substantial. However, the real test will be whether the sequel can recreate the mix of suspense, larger-than-life action, unexpected appearances and emotional conflict that helped make the original a box-office success.
