Back to basics: The Light Flip launches, designed to break your Reels addiction
Let us be honest. We have all opened Instagram for five minutes and somehow ended up looking at the feed for an hour. While it might seem like a waste of time, research from the US National Institutes of Health suggests that always looking at negative news or too much content can make you feel tired, reduce your ability to focus and make you feel stressed. However, since getting rid of your phone is not an option the US startup Light offers a different alternative. They have launched the Light Flip, a flip phone designed to help you use your phone less.

The Light Flip runs on the company’s system that gets rid of the distractions that most smartphones have. It does not have a web browser, social media apps, email, news feeds and an app store. It does not allow you to keep scrolling forever. Instead, it has the things: calls, text messaging, navigation, notes, music, podcasts, weather info, alarms, a calculator, a calendar voice memo, a hotspot function and even a built-in authenticator for two-step verification. The Light Flip is a phone that helps you use your phone less.
The Light Flip specifications and features
Although the phone might remind you of the phones many of us had in the early 2000s its hardware is not old. The Light Flip supports 5G networks, has dual-SIM capability and includes Wi-Fi 6 Bluetooth 5.0 GPS and USB-C charging. To avoid looking at the screen much and add a touch of nostalgia the Light Flip does not have a touchscreen and an external display. It has a 2.8-inch screen with a matte finish and a resolution of 480 x 640 pixels while its physical keypad allows you to compose messages using text and voice-to-text functions. The Light Flip is a phone with a keypad. The device is powered by a processor paired with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The Light Flip also has a 50-megapixel camera system that captures images using a 12-megapixel lens. The Light Flip has stereo speakers, dual noise-cancelling microphones and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Light Flip is powered by a battery which according to Light lasts for about a day and a half on a single charge. The device is resistant to dust and splash. Is available in six colors: black navy blue, red, pink, yellow and light gray.
The Light Flip was designed around the concept of using technology on purpose rather than technology that tries to get your attention. The company states that it will continue to add tools software updates though these will be offered as optional downloads rather than coming pre-installed. How much does the Light Flip cost?
The Light Flip is currently available for pre-order at $299 as a device. In the United States buyers can also opt for the Light Flip service plan, which starts at $39 per month and includes 1 GB of data as well as unlimited calls and text messages subject to a two-year contract. The Light Flip is a phone that you can buy. Shipments of the batch of devices are expected to begin in April 2027 and continue throughout May. You can buy the Light Flip soon.
