Nutritional Deficiency Drives Inflammation in 65% of Hair Loss Cases, Says Traya’s Saloni Anand This Hair Loss Awareness Month
The plate and the hairline are more connected than India assumes, and Traya’s data puts a number on the connection

This Hair Loss Awareness Month, Traya co founder Saloni Anand is pointing to the finding in the company’s 5 lakh man study that most directly implicates the Indian plate: nutritional deficiency driving inflammation in 65% of hair loss cases.
“Over 200 million Indians deal with hair loss. The majority reach for something to put on their hair. Our data across 5 lakh men shows the problem is almost always inside: stress in 60%, gut issues in 37%, sleep disruption in 30%, and nutritional deficiency driving inflammation in 65%. Hair loss is an internal health condition with an external symptom. Treating only what’s visible is why most solutions fail.” said Saloni Anand, Co Founder, Traya.
How nutrition reaches the hairline, per Traya’s data
The finding is stated in the study’s own terms: in 65% of hair loss cases, nutritional deficiency was driving inflammation. It is the most frequent single finding in the study, and it places nutrition alongside stress, sleep and gut health among the factors most commonly reported with hair loss.
The finding pairs naturally with the study’s gut number: 37% of hair loss cases involved gut issues affecting nutrient absorption. Nutrition and digestion, two subjects the Indian hair conversation almost never raises, appear in the data again and again.
Why this number indicts the quick fix
Nothing applied to the outside of the head addresses either factor. This is the recurring lesson of the dataset, and the reason, in Anand’s telling, that the category’s cycle of purchase and disappointment persists: the majority reach for something to put on their hair, while the factors her data identifies sit in the kitchen and the gut.
The awareness worth spreading this August is dietary in the widest sense: not a superfood list, but a connection. In roughly two of every three hair loss cases in the country’s largest study of its kind, nutrition was part of the file. Any man auditing his hair without auditing his plate is reading that file half open.
