Two workers killed as soil collapses at BDA underpass construction site

Bengaluru: Two migrant workers were killed after a portion of soil caved in at an underpass construction site being executed by the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) near the Dr Rajkumar Samadhi on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. near the FTI Circle when workers were engaged in removing water that had accumulated in an excavation dug for laying reinforced cement concrete (RCC).

The deceased have been identified as Parimal, 31, from West Bengal, and Sonaram, 26, from Odisha, Bengaluru North Division DCP B.S. Nemagowda said.Five workers were present at the site when the soil suddenly gave way. While three managed to escape, Parimal and Sonaram were trapped beneath the earth.

Parimal died at the spot. Sonaram was rescued with the assistance of local residents, police and emergency personnel and rushed to a private hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Three other workers — Sadanand, Sunil and Imtiyaz, from Jharkhand and West Bengal — sustained injuries and were shifted to hospital for treatment.

The incident has raised questions over safety measures at the construction site, particularly as the work was being carried out during the monsoon.BDA Commissioner Captain Manivannan said an inquiry had been ordered to establish the circumstances that led to the collapse. Officials have been directed to ensure the injured workers receive proper medical treatment. The contractor has also been instructed to provide compensation to the families of the deceased within 24 hours.

An internal BDA committee has been asked to investigate the accident and submit its report within 45 days. Meanwhile, Mahalakshmi Layout MLA K. Gopalaiah alleged that negligence by officials and the contractor was responsible for the tragedy.

He questioned the decision to undertake such a major excavation during the rainy season and said adequate precautions should have been taken before allowing work to continue. According to Gopalaiah, the excavation was around 18 to 19 feet deep and the collapse occurred while water was being pumped out. He said the project had remained incomplete for a long period before work resumed following his intervention.

The MLA demanded accountability from those responsible for ensuring safety at the construction site and urged authorities to take immediate measures to prevent similar accidents.
