PM Modi speaks to JD Vance, discusses strengthening India-US strategic partnership
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke to US Vice President JD Vance over the phone and discussed ways to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
The two leaders discussed cooperation across key areas, though further details about the conversation were not immediately available.
PM Modi also congratulated Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance on the birth of their son. He conveyed his best wishes to the family.
Call amid FCRA row
The conversation took place days after US Congressman Riley Moore raised concerns over proposed amendments to India’s laws governing foreign donations received by non-governmental organisations, trusts, educational institutions and religious bodies. Moore, a Republican representative from West Virginia, alleged that the proposed changes to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act could allow the Indian government to assume control of churches and religious charities.
He described the proposed legislation as a “clear attack against Christians” and warned that it could have implications for relations between India and the United States. The Ministry of External Affairs rejected the criticism on Thursday. It said legislative matters were part of India’s internal affairs. The ministry also said several countries, including the United States, regulate foreign funding through their own laws.
Previous call during conflict
Vance’s last publicly known telephone conversation with Modi took place in May 2025 during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. The Prime Minister later shared details of the exchange in the Lok Sabha. PM Modi told Parliament that he had seen around four missed calls from the US Vice President and returned the call. According to Modi, Vance warned him that Pakistan planned to launch a major attack against India. “Our response will be even stronger,” Modi said he told Vance.
Vance family welcomes son
The US Vice President and his wife recently welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance. The child was born at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland. Vance announced the birth on X and said Usha and the baby were “happy and healthy”. He added that their other children were overjoyed to meet their younger brother.
The birth also carried historical significance. It marked the first time in more than 150 years that a serving US Vice President welcomed a child while in office.
