Islampur firing: School headmaster shot dead on way to school in West Bengal

New Delhi: Tragic news emerged from Islampur’s Madaripur area on Saturday morning after a primary school headmaster was shot dead by unidentified miscreants while on his way to work. The deceased has been identified as Nazrul Islam, the headmaster of Rajabhim Primary School in Ramganj.

According to local sources, Islam, a resident of the Ambagan More area in Islampur, had no known political affiliations. Like any other day, he left his residence in the morning to head to school. However, as he reached the Madaripur area, attackers opened fire on him. Islam collapsed on the road with severe gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Islampur Sub-Divisional Hospital by local residents.

Given his critical condition, doctors administered primary treatment before transferring him to the Siliguri Municipal College and Hospital. He was subsequently taken to a private nursing home in Siliguri, where doctors pronounced him dead. His family later confirmed his passing.

The assailants managed to flee the scene immediately after the shooting. Upon receiving word of the incident, police arrived at the spot and initiated an investigation. Authorities are currently probing the motive behind the targeted attack and attempting to identify those involved.

The incident has sparked widespread panic and outrage across the locality. Family members stated that Islam had no known enmities with anyone. His colleagues at the school echoed similar sentiments, expressing utter shock over the tragedy. “As a headmaster, he was extremely kind, dutiful, and always immersed in his work. We are completely stunned by this event,” a fellow teacher remarked.

Notably, the site of Saturday’s shooting is adjacent to a hotel in Madaripur where a Trinamool Congress leader was previously shot. Police have intensified their investigation, taking all angles into account.
