Kolkata to witness major traffic curbs on August 10 for ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ rally
New Delhi: West Bengal will participate in the Centre’s Har Ghar Tiranga campaign for the first time, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announcing a massive Tiranga Yatra in Kolkata on August 10. The rally, expected to draw around 50,000 participants, will begin from the Netaji statue at Dharmatala, prompting extensive traffic restrictions across central Kolkata.
Key roads to remain closed
According to an advisory issued by the Kolkata Traffic Police, several major roads leading to the Maidan area will remain closed or witness traffic diversions during the event. These include:
- Kingsway
- R.R. Avenue
- Plassey Gate Road
- Mayo Road
- Jawaharlal Nehru Road
- Cathedral Road
- Queensway
- Red Road
- Khidirpur Road
- Lovers Lane
- Casuarina Avenue
Police said traffic may also be diverted on connecting roads depending on the crowd and situation, significantly affecting movement around Maidan, Red Road, and central Kolkata.
Restrictions on goods vehicles
The movement of goods vehicles will also be restricted on several major routes, including:
- Vidyasagar Setu (Second Hooghly Bridge)
- AJC Bose Road (from Lenin Sarani/Moulali crossing to Hastings)
- St. George’s Gate Road
- Strand Road (up to Raja Woodmunt Street)
- C.R. Avenue (southbound from G.C. Avenue)
- Jawaharlal Nehru Road
- S.P. Mukherjee Road (from Rashbehari Avenue to Exide crossing)
However, vehicles carrying LPG cylinders, CNG, petrol, diesel, oxygen, vegetables, medicines, fruits, fish, and milk will be exempt from the restrictions.
With the rally taking place on the first working day of the week, commuters have been advised to plan their travel in advance and expect delays in and around central Kolkata.
