‘Yamudu’ review: Gripping crime-thriller with intriguing mythological twist

Yamudu is an interesting crime thriller that takes a shot at an unconventional angle involving mythological overtones in the plot. It marks the directorial debut of Jagadish Amanchi, apart from acting and producing. Let’s dive into the review.

Story

The film follows the life of Vishwa (Jagadish Amanchi), an orphan who takes care of other elderly people in an old-age home along with his friends. The entire equation changes for him when he falls in love with Anu (Shravani Shetty) after seeing her in a temple. On the other side of the equation, we see Jagad (Akash Challa), a young music composer, who is on the top of the music industry. He is being chased by Harini (Advika Sharma), a fan who wants to rekindle the romance. Suddenly, the city witnesses a series of mysterious murders of women folk, and the police are clueless about the modus operandi of the killer as well as the motive. As the pieces start falling into place, it becomes clear that this killer has a vendetta that has its roots in history. The film then turns out to be a murder mystery, with the characters digging up the past to unveil the truth and bring the killer to book.

Performances

Jagadish Amanchi is sincere in his role as Vishwa, and he showcases his acting prowess. Shravani Shetty looks good and is convincing in her role. Advika Sharma shines bright as Harini, and so does Akash Challa. The others too play their part well.

Technicalities

Jagadish Amanchi should be appreciated for taking up the challenge and delivering a film with a mystery at its core. Shiva Kundrapu’s screenplay is tight and peels off the layers of mystery one by one to keep the viewer engaged. Bhavani Rakesh’s music and background score add to the suspense in the film. The camera beautifully captures the mystery around the killer, aided by a number of mythological dialogues that make Yamudu stand out in the genre.

Analysis

While Yamudu is not the first film to feature a serial killer with a vendetta, it manages to stand out in the genre due to the inclusion of mythological elements in the story. It has a fresh take on the Garuda Purana, and the first half sets the stage for the mystery as well as the romance. The second half is more focused on the killer and the reason behind the series of murders, as well as the connection between the characters. The film has a social message as well, in terms of women’s safety, which makes it more watchable.

In conclusion, Yamudu is a decent watch for those who are fans of murder mystery films, especially with a mythological angle. The film has a mix of emotions along with a number of mystery elements that are intriguing. The climax brings together all the pieces of the puzzle, making it a fairly engaging experience.
