WhatsApp Adds Bill Payments in India: Here’s How to Pay Your Bills
WhatsApp is expanding its role in India beyond messaging by launching a new Bill Payments feature. The Meta-owned platform will now allow users to pay several everyday bills directly from the app, eliminating the need to switch to another payment platform.

The new feature supports payments for electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card dues and loan repayments. It is powered by Bharat Connect, formerly known as the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), and gives users access to more than 22,700 billers across 30 categories.
WhatsApp has joined the competition with established digital payment platforms such as PhonePe and Google Pay. Both services rely heavily on Bharat Connect (BBPS), while together, according to NPCI data, they control over 80 per cent of India’s UPI and digital utility payment market.
How to pay bills on WhatsApp
The new feature is designed to be relatively straightforward to use. Users need to open WhatsApp and tap the rupee icon at the top of the home screen. They can then select the relevant bill category and biller, and enter and confirm their account details. Once the bill is generated, users can complete the payment using UPI, a debit card or a credit card. After a successful payment, the biller is saved on the Payments Home screen, making it easier to access the same service in the future.
WhatsApp is also allowing users to manage multiple accounts under a single biller. This could be useful for people handling bills for different homes, offices or family members, as they can manage them from one place instead of using multiple apps or accounts.
Frequently used categories will automatically appear on the Payments Home screen. Users can tap the “See All” option to browse the complete list of more than 20 bill categories available through the service.
WhatsApp expands its utility services
The Bill Payments launch is part of WhatsApp’s broader push to become more useful for everyday tasks in India. The platform already supports services such as mobile recharges, metro ticket bookings in several cities and access to government services through official chatbots.
With bill payments now added to the mix, WhatsApp is attempting to bring another routine activity into the same app people already use to communicate with friends, family and businesses.
WhatsApp says the Bill Payments feature is being rolled out gradually across India. It will be available to Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.
