West Indies in danger of missing direct ODI World Cup qualification again

New Delhi: West Indies are once again at risk of missing direct qualification for the, with the deadline to secure a spot in the next edition through the rankings fast approaching. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has set September 30, 2026, as the deadline for direct qualification through the rankings.

The top eight Full Member sides in the ODI rankings, excluding co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will automatically advance to the 14-team tournament. The remaining two Full Members will have to participate in the World Cup Qualifiers, which are scheduled to be played from February 21 to March 23 2027.

West Indies are currently placed in the 10th position in the ODI rankings and have only two games remaining before the deadline, both against India in September. However, even winning those matches may not be enough to lift them into the top eight.

Their fate could depend on the outcome of the five-match ODI series between Afghanistan and Ireland. Afghanistan are currently placed eighth, while Ireland is in 12th position. If Ireland manage to win the series by 4-1 or 5-0, West Indies could still move inside the top eight by beating India in both ODIs.

Afghanistan-Ireland series could decide qualification fate

The equation will change if Afghanistan manage to win the series, with the result strengthening their position in the rankings and leaving West Indies with little chance of qualifying directly for the tournament.

West Indies have previously failed to qualify for the 2023 ODI World Cup after suffering a defeat in the Super Over to the Netherlands in the Qualifier in Harare. It was the first time the two-time champions had missed the 50-over tournament.

The Men in Maroon also missed automatic qualification for the 2019 ODI World Cup after finishing outside the top eight at the September 30, 2017 deadline. They then travelled to Zimbabwe for the 2018 World Cup Qualifier, where they won the tournament to book their place at the World Cup in England.
