‘Want to dominate world cricket’: Coach Amol Muzumdar outlines ambitious path for India women’s team
New Delhi: After a period of significant success, India women’s cricket head coach is now focused on taking the side to greater heights. While winning big tournaments remains crucial, the head coach wants the Women in Blue to take the next step and establish themselves as the dominant force in world cricket.

Mazumdar believes that the side has the talent and mindset to achieve great things, stressing the importance of preparation and discipline. He wants his players to approach every match with the same intensity, irrespective of the opposition or format.
“Two years down the line, if they start dominating world cricket… dominance is something that we have always spoken about within the squad. Being ruthless on the ground is another thing that we have always maintained,” Muzumdar said during an event organised by the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai (SJAM).
“Obviously, from the background where I come from, my growth in Mumbai cricket was kind of similar. I try to inculcate those things, or give it back. If we start dominating world cricket, I would be happy,” Muzumdar added.
How Muzumdar has shaped India women’s team
Muzumdar became the head coach of the Indian women’s team on October 25, 2023, replacing Hrishikesh Kanitkar. His appointment happened at a crucial time, with the Women in Blue preparing for two big ICC tournaments in the next two years.
The biggest milestone of his tenure came on November 2, 2025, when India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final to lift their maiden ODI World Cup title in Navi Mumbai. Before that, the Women in Blue had scripted history in the semifinal, chasing down a 339-run target against Australia to register the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI cricket at the time.
The head coach is keen to build a team that can consistently challenge for the titles while defeating the best sides in the world, rather than relying on individual moments of brilliance or delivering standout performances only during major tournaments.
India have recently completed a clean sweep of both the three-match T20I and ODI series against Zimbabwe, winning all six games. The challenge will get much tougher in December when the Women in Blue travel to South Africa for a multi-format series including a one-off Test, three ODIs and three T20Is.
