Veteran Actress Sowcar Janaki Passes Away At 94

Sankaramanchi Janaki who is popularly known as Sowcar Janaki, passed away a few minutes ago. She breathed her last at the age of 94 in a private hospital in Chennai where she had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments. Nadigar Sangam president Nassar confirmed the news through an official statement.

Janaki was admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai a couple of days ago. As her condition deteriorated, doctors shifted her to the intensive care unit (ICU) for advanced medical care.

Sowcar Janaki’s mortal remains will be kept at Centoph Road in Teynampet for the public to pay their last respects from 5 p.m. This iconic actress was born on 12th December, 1931 and her career spanned over seven long decades. She acted in nearly 400 movies and also performed on stage in 300+ shows.

She also received two Nandi Awards, a Kalaimamani award, Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award and India’s fourth highest-civilian award, Padma Shri. Sowcar Janaki made her debut with L.V. Prasad’s Shavukaru in 1950 and thus her first film title turned into a moniker.

Some of her notable Tamil movies are, Panam Paduthum Padu (1954), Puthiya Paravai (1964), Neerkumizhi (1965), Mahakavi Kalidas (1966), Edhir Neechal (1968), Iru Kodugal (1969), Uyarndha Manithan (1968), Kaviya Thalaivi (1970), Ranga Rattinam (1971), Thillu Mullu (1981), Vettri Vizhaa (1989), Devi (1999) and Hey Ram (2000).

Coming to Telugu, she acted in Rojulu Marayi (1955), Kanyasulkam (1955), Jayam Manade (1956), Panduranga Mahatyam (1957), Doctor Chakravarty (1964), Akka Chellelu (1970), Badi Panthulu (1972), Tayaramma Bangarayya (1979), Samsaram Oka Chadarangam (1987) and Devi (1999).

Her last Telugu movie Santosh Shoban’s Anni Manchi Sakunamule released in 2023. Sowcar Janaki’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers.
