UP MLC Election Results: BJP suffers major setback in Varanasi, SP wins both seats

Varanasi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a major setback in Varanasi with the Samajwadi Party (SP) winning both seats in the MLC Elections here. Varanasi is the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

While Ashutosh Sinha won from Varanasi Graduate seat by 18,000 votes, Lal Bihari Yadav won from Varanasi Teacher seat by a margin of 4,898 votes. In the Varanasi MLC Graduates constituency election, Ashutosh Sinha received 53,573 votes, while BJP candidate Kedarnath Singh got 35,114 votes. Ashutosh Sinha was elected MLC for the second time. After his victory, he said, “This is just a glimpse; the entire state of Uttar Pradesh is yet to be conquered.”

SP won 5 seats in MLC elections

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP retained six seats, while the Samajwadi Party won five, increasing its tally by two from the previous election. These results come ahead of next year’s state assembly elections, in which the BJP is aiming for a third consecutive victory.

The BJP retained the Meerut, Bareilly-Moradabad, Lucknow, Agra, and Gorakhpur-Faizabad seats, including the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ seat by a narrow margin of 307 votes. However, the party suffered a setback in Varanasi, where the Samajwadi Party won both the Graduate and Teachers’ seats. The Samajwadi Party also won the Agra Teachers’ seat, the Allahabad-Jhansi Graduate seat, and the Lucknow Graduate seat. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav described the results as a major setback for the BJP and claimed that the party had been completely wiped out in the UP MLC elections.

Akhilesh hails SP’s win in Varanasi

Taking to X, after the results, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav wrote, “The BJP has turned into a ‘flop show’. The BJP folks lost in Varanasi in the first ‘counting’, then lost again in the re-‘re-counting’, meaning the votes were counted twice and both times the BJP and their allies lost. This is the double loss of the double engine.”

He added, “The BJP’s defeat in the Legislative Council elections has written the preface to the UP Assembly elections to be held in 2027. On one hand, this is a defeat of the BJP’s anti-‘teacher, student, and education’ policies, and on the other hand, the educated ‘unemployed graduates’ have also delivered their verdict.”
