Turbulence or technical failure? Air India flight probe takes new turn

New Delhi: The Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi was already facing scrutiny after a sudden loss of altitude left 17 people injured. But questions surrounding the incident have now grown with investigators looking beyond the initial turbulence explanation.

The Airbus A320 reportedly dropped around 300 feet while flying over Odisha. What caused the sudden fall remains unclear, as possible technical problems, the pilot’s actions and post-flight drug test results have all become part of the discussion.

The Civil Aviation Ministry’s note has added to the questions. While the incident was initially described as severe turbulence, the ministry’s account did not use the word “turbulence” and now Airbus has also joined the investigation.

Questions over cockpit response

Even if the aircraft suffered a serious technical problem, questions remain over the pilot’s actions. Aviation procedures require pilots to maintain control of the aircraft during an emergency.

The fact that the pilot was reportedly seen at the rear of the aircraft has drawn attention. Investigators will need to establish why the pilot was away from the cockpit and whether this had any connection with the incident.

Another question is why the aircraft continued towards Delhi instead of landing at the nearest suitable airport after the reported technical problem.

Pilot’s drug test under scrutiny

The pilot-in-command also tested positive for psychoactive substances during post-flight screening in Delhi. However, a failed screening test alone does not prove that the pilot had taken recreational drugs before the flight.

Some prescription medicines can also leave traces in the body. Pilots are required to follow medical clearance rules for certain medicines. The final test results are awaited and are expected to provide more clarity.

For now, investigators are examining several possibilities including turbulence, a possible hydraulic failure and the circumstances surrounding the pilot’s actions. The probe will have to establish whether these factors were connected and what caused the sudden drop in altitude.
