Tollywood actress Sowcar Janaki dies in Chennai

Tollywood veteran actress Sowcar Janaki (94) passed away in Chennai following an extended illness of respiratory infections and other age-related diseases. Sowcar Janaki, born as Tekumalla Janaki, began her career at a very young age by appearing on stage in dramas and participated in a radio program in Telugu at the age of 11. She made her film debut in “Raksha Rekha” in 1949.

She was named ‘Sowcar Janaki,’ after stardom was achieved with the super hit film “Sowcar” in 1950, and then went on to star in over 400 Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada films, three Hindi films, and one Malayalam film. Furthermore, the legendary actress received our country’s fourth-highest civilian award, Padma Shri in 2022.

Some of her notable films are ‘Vaddante Dabbu,’ ‘Kanyasulkam,’ ‘Pichchi Pullayya,’ ‘Rechukka-Pagatichukka,’ ‘Rojulu Marayi,’ ‘Sonthavooru,’ ‘Jayam Manade,’ ‘Doctor Chakravarthy,’ ‘Samsaram Oka Chadarangam,’ ‘Thodikodallu,’ ‘Babu Bangaram,’ ‘Geethanjali,’ and ‘Anni Manchi Sakunamule.’
