The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra could get a major display upgrade—and that’s not all
Samsung appears to be preparing a new addition to its foldable smartphone lineup, and this time it might carry the “Ultra” moniker for the first time. Recent reports suggest that the model expected to launch as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra might indeed arrive with that name, while the wider variant seen in leaks could simply be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Although the naming scheme might seem a bit confusing, it indicates that Samsung intends to position the thinner model as its premium foldable offering.

Now, a new leak suggests the Ultra model could arrive with a notable display upgrade.
A significant display upgrade could be on the way
According to well-known leaker Ice Universe, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will feature a “significantly improved” screen resolution. This information was shared on X, though the leaker did not reveal specific figures. It is also unclear whether the upgrade will apply to the outer screen, the inner foldable screen, or both.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 features an outer screen with a resolution of 2,520 x 1,080 pixels, while the inner foldable screen offers 2,184 x 1,968 pixels.
Interestingly, the outer screen has a higher pixel density than the larger inner screen. Therefore, the internal display might be the one to benefit most from a resolution boost. However, there is also a possibility that Samsung will upgrade both screens.
Will users notice the difference?
On paper, a higher-resolution display sounds impressive. However, in practice, Samsung’s foldable screens already offer great sharpness. This means the improvement might not radically transform the daily user experience. Even so, for buyers investing a significant sum in a high-end foldable, additional screen improvements could make the device feel even more future-proof. More than just a screen upgrade
The screen might not be the only aspect receiving improvements. Previous reports indicate that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra could be equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. The device is also rumoured to feature a 5,000 mAh battery.
Samsung could also focus on making the foldable device even thinner. Rumours suggest the phone might measure around 4.1 mm when unfolded, potentially making it thinner and lighter than its predecessor.
The standard Fold 8 remains a mystery
While details about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra continue to emerge, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 remains largely under wraps. Its availability in certain markets, including Japan, is still unclear. For now, reportedly only the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has appeared in official certification records, reinforcing speculation that Samsung is preparing a new premium category within its foldable lineup.
The launch could be near
Fortunately, Samsung fans might not have to wait long for answers. The company’s next Unpacked event is expected to take place in London on July 22. If reports are accurate, Samsung could use the event to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the Galaxy Z Flip 8, and other new devices.
