Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Announces Withdrawal Of Cases Against Protesting Farmers, Teachers

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced that his government will withdraw the cases filed against farmers and teachers that took part in protests against the previous DMK government.

In the state Legislature, Vijay stated that the previous government led by MK Stalin has treated the protesters “inhumane” in spite of their being “free to protest” in accordance with their democratic rights.

The Chief Minister stated that the cases were lodged against farmers and teachers between May 2021 and 2026, and that many of these cases are still pending, creating problems for farmers and teachers.

Vijay assured farmers and teachers that his government would stand in their favour and help them in their legitimate demands. He also said that by pulling the cases, it would allow for strengthening democratic rights and increase the trust between citizens and government.

Vijay termed farmers as the “backbone” of Tamil Nadu and noted that protests over development projects have resulted in the filing of cases against farmers.

Some of the points mentioned were against opposition of SIPCOT industrial developments and the proposed airport project at Parandur.

The Chief Minister revealed that the withdrawal of cases has been made after taking into account the challenges faced by the protesters who were booked.

After Vijay made the announcement, the body demanded the state government to extend the move to people, including students, who were booked in the protest against the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

The PMK also appealed to the government to withdraw cases registered against people who protested against the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC).

Tamil Nadu Minister for Law Nirmal Kumar agreed with the government’s willingness to consider the demands.

The government under Vijay is taking a step towards revisiting the pending issues from protests from the previous government, especially the farmer and teacher protests.
