Skyroot deepens aerospace footprint with Tamil Nadu facility

Hyderabad: Hyderabad-based space-tech unicorn Skyroot Aerospace, maker of India’s first private orbital rocket, will invest Rs 250 crore to set up its first facility in Tamil Nadu at Thoothukudi, creating around 500 jobs.

The company will set up the facility for the storage, assembly, integration and testing of its launch vehicles. The MoU with Guidance Tamil Nadu will be signed at the Vetri Conclave here on Thursday in the presence of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and exchanged with Deepak Jacob, Managing Director and CEO, Guidance Tamil Nadu.

The facility’s location is significant as it is close to the Indian Space Research Organisation’s second spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam, which is targeted to become operational in 2026-27.

Skyroot, founded by Pawan Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, became a unicorn earlier this year and has emerged as one of the most prominent players in India’s private space sector. On July 18, its Vikram-1 completed India’s first private orbital launch, making India only the third country with private orbital launch capability, according to the company.

“ Tamil Nadu’s strategic location, the upcoming spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam and its strong industrial ecosystem make it an important part of Skyroot’s next phase of growth. This facility will strengthen our capabilities as we scale the Vikram programme towards a higher launch cadence,” Naga Bharath Daka, Co-founder and CTO, Skyroot Aerospace, said.

The investment is part of a broader investment push by Tamil Nadu, with 97 companies signing fresh MoUs at the state government’s first “Vetri Tamil Nadu Investors Conclave 2026”. The pacts involve total investment commitments of more than Rs 67,452 crore and are expected to generate around 1.20 lakh jobs.

The MoU is among eight agreements signed at the conclave across aerospace and defence, space and maritime sectors, involving a combined investment of Rs 3,087 crore and creating 6,970 jobs. Other major investments announced at the conclave include Rs 400 crore by Agnikul Cosmos for space technology and launch vehicle assembly in Thoothukudi, Rs 2,500 crore by the Hinduja Group in renewable energy and mobility solutions, and Rs 4,000 crore by Daimler India Commercial Vehicles in Kanchipuram.
