Sir Harry Kane? England striker opens up on knighthood wish after Ballon d’Or win

New Delhi: Harry Kane became the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001 after his magnificent season with Bayern Munich. pipped Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, joining an elite list of English players to have won the prestigious individual honour.

Kane’s maiden Ballon d’Or winner has fuelled demands of a knighthood for the England striker. The England captain recently opened up on the chances of being knighted and admitted that getting used to being called ‘Sir Harry’ might take some time. While he called the title appealing, Kane insisted he would prefer to stick to his name.

“It would sound good! But I’d feel weird when everyone calls me Sir. So we’ll just keep it as Harry for now,” Kane told German newspaper BILD.

Kane became only the fifth English player after Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen to win the Ballon d’Or. The 33-year-old also became the first Bayern Munich player since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 198i to win the award.

Harry Kane’s sensational season

Kane enjoyed a remarkable individual campaign for Bayern Munich and England in the 2025-26 season, which helped him win his maiden Ballon d’Or. The England striker scored a whopping 73 goals for club and country across competitions last season to finish as the top scorer in Europe.

Kane’s tally of 73 goals is only bettered by the legendary Lionel Messi, who scored 82 goals for club and country in the 2011-12 season. Kane scored 61 goals for Bayern Munich across all competitions in the season, the most by any player in a single campaign in the club’s history.

He scored 12 goals for England throughout the season and helped them reach the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Kane inspired Bayern to a Bundesliga triumph and also won the DFB-Pokal and DFB Super Cup with the club. He scored 36 goals in the Bundesliga to win the Golden Boot and scored 14 goals in the Champions League to help Bayern reach the semifinals.

Kane won his maiden Ballon d’Or in London earlier this week and was also presented with the Gerd Muller Trophy for the Best Striker of the Year.
