Rainfall to ease in south India, heavy showers forecast for northeast: IMD
New Delhi: Rainfall activity over southern peninsular India is likely to decrease, while parts of Karnataka may continue to receive heavy to very heavy showers over the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

Karnataka braces for rain
In its latest weather forecast, the IMD said isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall was possible over Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka on August 2 and 3. The warning maps showed an orange alert for parts of Karnataka on Sunday, advising residents and local authorities to remain prepared for adverse weather conditions.
The department, however, predicted a broader reduction in rainfall across southern India after the next two days. Most parts of the peninsula are expected to remain under either a yellow alert or no warning during the subsequent period.
Rainfall to increase in northeast
Meanwhile, rainfall activity is set to increase across northeast India. Isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely over the region during the next five days, raising the possibility of localised flooding, waterlogging and landslides in vulnerable areas.
The IMD’s subdivision-level forecasts showed orange alerts for parts of the northeast on several days. Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are among the areas that could experience intensified monsoon showers during the forecast period.
Rainfall is also expected to increase along the foothills of the central and eastern Himalayas over the next four to five days. The affected belt could include parts of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

According to the IMD’s warning system, an orange alert calls on authorities and residents to be prepared to take action, while a yellow alert advises people to remain watchful.
Residents in areas facing heavy-rain warnings have been advised to monitor local forecasts, avoid waterlogged roads and exercise caution near rivers, steep slopes and landslide-prone locations. Authorities may also closely monitor low-lying areas as rainfall activity intensifies.
