PM Modi launches Bhogapuram International Airport: Here’s what makes it special

Vizianagaram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district. Before formally opening the facility, the Prime Minister toured the passenger terminal building to review its infrastructure and passenger amenities.

During his visit, he also inaugurated, dedicated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth more than Rs 17,900 crore in Bhogapuram.

Modern aviation infrastructure

Developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at a cost of over Rs 5,640 crore, the greenfield airport has been built to accommodate up to six million passengers every year.

The passenger terminal has been designed to provide a modern, efficient and seamless travel experience. It features advanced infrastructure and smart technologies aimed at improving passenger convenience while supporting future aviation requirements.

The airport is equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Airside 4.0 technologies, an Airport Predictive Operations Centre (APOC), biometric passenger processing, automated baggage handling systems and intelligent operational monitoring solutions.

These technologies are expected to improve operational efficiency, strengthen safety measures, optimise resource use and provide smoother passenger services.

Focus on sustainability

The newly inaugurated airport has also been developed with several environmentally friendly features.

These include energy-efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, energy-saving lighting, a 5 MW solar power plant, rainwater harvesting systems, smart building management, waste management facilities, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and environmental monitoring measures.

The terminal has been designed in line with Green Building Standards and is registered with the US Green Building Council (USGBC), highlighting its focus on sustainable development.

Inspired by Andhra heritage

The airport’s architecture reflects the cultural identity of Andhra Pradesh. The terminal roof has been inspired by traditional Chuttilu cottages and the scenic landscape of the Araku Valley.

Its flowing architectural form also symbolises the graceful movement of a flying fish, blending regional design elements with contemporary airport infrastructure.

Boost for regional growth

The government expects the airport to significantly improve air connectivity in Andhra Pradesh while supporting tourism, trade, investment and employment generation across the region.

With modern technology, sustainable infrastructure and expanded passenger capacity, the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is expected to become an important transport hub for the state and contribute to its long-term economic development.
