No batting coach for IPL 2027: CSK confirm backroom staff complete after Mohit, Morkel’s arrivals

New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have confirmed that they will head into the new season without a designated batting coach after completing the overhaul of their backroom staff. have made significant changes to their coaching setup under new head coach Zaheer Khan.

The five-time champions let go of their ex-batting coach Michael Hussey and former bowling coach Eric Simmons, among others, after sacking Stephen Fleming as the head coach earlier this year. CSK on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of former India pacer Mohit Sharma as their new bowling coach.

Former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel also returned to the franchise as an assistant coach. Meanwhile, former England spinner Gareth Batty, who guided Surrey to back-to-back three County Championships, also joined CSK as an assistant coach.

“Our coaching staff is complete. Whoever we announced yesterday will form our backroom team; we will not have a batting coach,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told Sportstar on Tuesday.

Viswanathan’s comments have put an end to speculation around more former players joining the CSK setup in coaching roles. Rumours were rife that the franchise could bring in Suresh Raina or Ambati Rayudu as batting coach, however, they have decided not to have a designated batting coach for IPL 2027.

Meanwhile, CSK have retained two members of the previous support staff. James Foster will continue as the fielding coach, while Sridharan Sriram has been retained as an assistant coach ahead of the new season.

Zaheer Khan’s decision not to have a batting coach

CSK CEO Viswanathan revealed that it was head coach Zaheer’s decision to not have a designated batting coach in the backroom staff. However, he insisted Batty can be used in a batting-related role.

“It’s a decision taken by Zaheer (on not having a batting coach). But yes, we are exploring the option of using Batty as a batting mentor. Discussions are ongoing,” said the CSK CEO.
