Meta’s global team summoned by Indian government over CSAM, account restrictions on August 5-6

New Delhi: The Indian government has called Meta’s global leadership team for meetings in India on August 5 and 6 to discuss a series of concerns related to the company’s platforms, including the handling of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), content moderation and restrictions on verified accounts.

The talks take place against the backdrop of growing concerns in India regarding the accountability of the platform on Meta. IT Secretary S. Krishnan told PTI that the government hopes that the top tech giants would make their systems function properly and the issues they raise would impact users, public figures and safety online.

Government to Raise CSAM, AI Content and Account Moderation Issues

In a statement to the reporters, Krishnan said the government will ask Meta about several other matters. These encompass the company’s response to the problem of CSAM, its efforts to verify content created by AI or synthetic content, and its measures to ensure that content is not removed from verified accounts of well-known personalities by mistake.

“There are a range of issues… the CSAM issue was raised, so what measures have been taken regarding that, and synthetically generated information… to what extent is that being looked at? Then, of course, for prominent personalities, when they have verified accounts, if content has to be taken down, there have to be safeguards,” Krishnan said, according to PTI.

Meeting Comes After Recent Meta-Controversies

The meeting takes on significance given that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had just posted a message on his Facebook page on India’s youth and the government’s pledge to take stringent steps in the wake of paper leaks being restricted on the platform for a few hours.

Meta has also come under regulatory pressure because of its claims regarding the amount of child sexual abuse material visible in paid ads on Instagram. Earlier, the government issued a notice to the company over the issue.

Government Wants Answers From Meta

The government is keen to understand why some of these issues still persist despite the technological prowess of Meta, Krishnan said. He said the talks would cover the issues that it has to deal with and what it is doing to enhance its systems.

“We’d like to learn from them kind of why some of these are not working the way they ought to be and what the challenges are,” Krishnan was quoted as saying by PTI. As one of the world’s biggest tech firms, he said Meta should be able to do this well.
