Meet Namit Malhotra, Ramayana producer whose net worth is over Rs 9,000 crore

New Delhi: Producer Namit Malhotra, who is backing Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Ramayana, belongs to a family who has a net worth of Rs 16,000 crore, according to the Hurun India Rich List 2026. The Malhotra family has reportedly witnessed a 279 per cent increase in its wealth, securing the 232nd position on the list.

Namit’s father, Naresh Malhotra, owns visual effects company Prime Focus, which has played a significant role in the family’s business journey. The producer himself was placed at the 3,306th position in the Hurun Global Rich List 2026, released earlier this year, with an estimated net worth of over Rs 9,204 crore. Meanwhile, Ramayana is being made on a budget of Rs 4,000 crore.

Namit Malhotra recalls losing 90% of his wealth in 2008

While his current financial standing reflects the scale of his business journey, Namit has also spoken about a major setback that nearly derailed his ambitions. The producer recently revealed that he lost 90 per cent of his wealth in 2008, following the global financial crisis.

Namit moved to Los Angeles in 2007 with the ambition of building a global company that could bring together filmmaking talent from India and the West. However, the recession that followed a year later put immense financial pressure on his business.

Speaking at a special presentation of Ramayana at the Academy Theater in Los Angeles, Namit described the occasion as his personal Oscar moment. He reflected on his journey from a small garage setup to building an internationally recognised visual effects business.

“In my pursuit of building a global company and connecting the East and the West, I set foot in LA in 2007 and haven’t looked back since. An immigrant who lost 90% of his wealth with the fun times in 2008, as I am sure some of you may remember, to bounce back today and be able to bring the biggest independent production in the world… I can’t even tell you what it feels like to stand here today and say this,” he said.

He further spoke about bringing together talent from India and the West for the project.

From a Mumbai garage to eight Academy Awards

Namit’s journey in the entertainment industry began with a small video-editing and computer-graphics venture in a Mumbai garage. He started the business with an Apple computer and brought in three of his former professors to help him build it.

Reflecting on those early days at the Los Angeles event, he said, “For a third-generation film family background, and a garage startup kid at 19 with an Apple computer working with three of his teachers who were all of 21. This is what dreams are made of, and what better place to share this moment than the city of dreams – Los Angeles.”

He also highlighted the achievements of his visual effects company DNEG, which has won eight Academy Awards, including seven in the last 11 years. The company has worked with acclaimed filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve.
