Lisandro Martinez issues apology for post-match outburst after meeting Manchester United leadership
New Delhi: issued a formal apology after criticising the club’s board following a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League (UCL). He has entered the last year of his contract at Manchester United, which runs out next summer, but the club has an option to extend it by a further 12 months to June 2028.

He had publicly called out the director of football Jason Wilcox during his post-match interviews and suggested that head coach Michael Carrick has not been backed properly during the summer transfer window. Manchester United hierarchy, including Wilcox and Carrick, met with the defender at the club’s training ground on Thursday before the 28-year-old released a statement apologising for his comments.
“Today I met with the club’s leadership and the manager. It was a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday’s game,” Martinez wrote in a statement shared on Instagram.
“Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity. The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise,” he added.
The apology came after the Argentine defender criticised United’s recruitment strategy after their defeat in Madrid. In a post-match interview to Amazon Prime, Martinez had said he expected more from director of football Jason Wilcox and called for more investment to help Manchester United compete with the top European sides.
“I expect more from our technical director. I have to be honest. And also, as players, we have to do more. “We had a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, from upstairs, to bring in more players to compete, because many teams have brought in many players as well,” Martinez had said.
Manchester United’s poor start to season
Michael Carrick’s side extended their winless run to five games in all competitions, which left them with just three points in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) league phase. The Red Devils had started their European campaign with a 4-0 win against Sabah FK but have since struggled to find consistency.
The club is currently placed 13th in the standings with just six points in as many games. They will next face Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday before travelling to Como for their next Champions League match on October 21.
