Kimi Antonelli: Mercedes’ answer to life after Lewis Hamilton
New Delhi: When Lewis Hamilton announced at the start of 2024 that he was moving to Ferrari from Mercedes, it sent shockwaves across the motorsport world. For Silver Arrows, it was a difficult act to follow. How do you replace a seven-time Formula 1 world champion who enjoyed one of the most successful driver partnerships in the sport’s history?

Mercedes, though, had to just look at its own driver development programme for a replacement. Team principal Toto Wolff turned towards a teenager who had been on the team’s radar since his karting days. was just 17 then and was seen as the driver who could eventually lead Mercedes into its next chapter. Alongside George Russell, he could be the combination that could bring back the trophies more consistently.
The decision was a bit of a gamble. Antonelli had impressive credentials in junior racing but had yet to establish himself in Formula 2. Formula 1 looked like a distant dream still, and at his age, he had a lot of time to cover that distance. Mercedes, though, believed they had a generational talent and potential justified an early promotion.
Two years down the line, that decision has become one of the defining moves in Mercedes’ recent history. Antonelli has progressed from an inexperienced rookie carrying the expectations of replacing Hamilton to becoming a Formula 1 world champion in 2026, aged just 20. His journey also represents Mercedes’ commitment to developing its own talent rather than relying on established names in the driver market.
He is now the youngest F1 world champion ever, a title previously held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 at the time. Plus, in 73 years, he is the first Italian driver to take home the title.

Antonelli’s prodigal talent honed by Mercedes through years
Antonelli’s promotion was not an overnight decision. Mercedes had been watching the Italian since his karting days. They officially brought him into its junior programme in April 2019, when he was just 12 years old. His progress through the junior categories gave the team several reasons to believe he could eventually make the step into Formula 1.
In 2020 and 2021, Antonelli won the FIA European Karting Championship in successive seasons. He then moved into single-seater racing, competing in Italian Formula 4 in 2021 before winning both the Italian and ADAC F4 championships in 2022.
His 2022 campaign was particularly impressive, with 22 victories, 21 pole positions and 27 podium finishes across the two championships. Antonelli carried that momentum into 2023, winning both the Formula Regional Middle East and Formula Regional European championships.
Mercedes’ confidence in the youngster was reflected in its decision to bypass Formula 3 altogether. Antonelli moved directly into Formula 2 with PREMA Racing in 2024, a considerable jump for a driver who was still in his teens. He finished sixth in the championship, recording victories at Silverstone and Budapest.
His performances convinced Mercedes that he was ready for a much bigger opportunity. Having previously missed the opportunity to bring Max Verstappen into the team early in his career, Wolff was clearly not wanting to let go of another one.
The challenge awaiting Antonelli was considerably bigger than simply securing a seat at Mercedes. Hamilton had spent 12 seasons with the team, winning six of his seven drivers’ championships with the Silver Arrows. His partnership with Mercedes also helped the team secure eight constructors’ titles. The British driver had become central to Mercedes’ identity during its dominant period in the hybrid era. His time was equivalent to Michael Schumacher’s stay with Ferrari. To be one in the fabric of the team for an 18-year-old was almost impossible to imagine.
A promising start followed by a difficult rookie season
Antonelli made his Formula 1 debut at the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, finishing fourth in a performance that showed he belonged on the big stage. However, the transition from junior racing to Formula 1 was not without its challenges. He made history at the Miami Grand Prix by becoming the youngest driver to secure pole position in an F1 session, taking the top spot for the Sprint. His first Grand Prix podium arrived in Canada, where he finished third.
However, the European leg of the season was considerably more difficult. The pressure of racing for Mercedes, coupled with the expectations surrounding his promotion, reflected on his performances. Antonelli later admitted that he allowed the pressure to get the better of him in that. Speaking on the SAP Significant Figures podcast in 2026, he explained that he felt he was letting down the people who had believed in him, particularly Wolff, who had personally backed his promotion.
A meeting with the team after the European season helped him reset. Antonelli gradually recovered his form and finished the campaign strongly, securing consecutive podiums in Brazil and Las Vegas. He ended his debut season seventh in the drivers’ championship with 150 points and three Grand Prix podiums. While the campaign included difficult spells, it also gave him valuable experience in handling the demands of a top Formula 1 team.
From a rookie learning the ropes to a championship winner
If 2025 was about understanding the demands of Formula 1, 2026 became the season in which Antonelli demonstrated what Mercedes had seen in him all along. His second campaign began with a second-place finish in Australia before he secured his maiden Grand Prix victory in China. He followed that with another win in Japan, becoming the youngest driver to lead the Formula 1 drivers’ championship.
What followed was an extraordinary run of form. Antonelli won three more races to complete five consecutive victories from his first Grand Prix win. This was a big achievement in his achievement. His performances put him firmly in the championship conversation and gave Mercedes a driver capable of consistently fighting at the front.
There were still challenges along the way. His title credentials were tested during a period in which he managed only one victory across six races. However, one of the defining moments of his campaign came at his home race in Monza. Starting from 19th on the grid, Antonelli produced a remarkable recovery to win the Italian Grand Prix.
The victory was particularly significant, considering the historical importance of Monza to both Mercedes and Italian motorsport. He carried that momentum into the remaining races, mixing race-winning pace with greater consistency. At the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1, 2026, Antonelli secured his 16th podium of the season, finishing third and mathematically sealing the drivers’ championship.
At 20 years and 68 days old, he became the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s previous record. He also became Italy’s first drivers’ world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. It was a remarkable turnaround for a driver who had finished seventh in his rookie season just a year earlier.
Could Antonelli be the next face of Mercedes?
Mercedes’ decision to promote Antonelli was about more than finding a replacement for Hamilton. It represented a long-term investment in a driver the team had developed since his early teenage years. There were established names available in the driver market when Hamilton announced his departure. However, Mercedes chose to trust its junior programme and give one of its most promising graduates an opportunity that very few drivers receive at such a young age.
The move also led Russell to take on a more prominent leadership role within the team. The Briton had already spent several seasons alongside Hamilton and understood the expectations of driving for Mercedes. His experience provided Antonelli with an important reference point during his transition into Formula 1.
Interestingly, Antonelli’s own account of his rookie struggles suggests that Mercedes’ support system played an important role in his development. He acknowledged that the team helped him navigate difficult periods and allowed him to reset when his performances began to suffer. By 2026, that learning curve had translated into race victories, consistency and ultimately a world championship.
After following his season closely, he does have a lot of talent, but he has to return season after season with similar performance. One could argue, Mercedes had the best car in the season, the fact is Antonelli was brilliant with tactics, his entry and exit pace, and fabulously engineered overtakes. He has the raw pace, and while Hamilton’s feat with the team is far away, still, Antonelli could be the face for Mercedes in their next phase of life.
