Karnataka High Court defers hearing on CT Ravi’s plea, directs no coercive action till July 31

New Delhi: The Karnataka High Court has adjourned the hearing on BJP MLC C.T. Ravi’s petition challenging the FIR registered against him over his controversial remarks related to the NEET protests, directing police not to take any coercive action against him until July 31.

The case, originally registered at the Chikkamagaluru Town Police Station, has now been transferred to the Special Court for MPs and MLAs in Bengaluru.

Ravi had approached the High Court seeking to quash or stay FIR No. 149, which was registered under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Appearing for Ravi, senior advocate Arun Shyam argued that the FIR had been lodged by a third party and sought interim protection from further proceedings.

Opposing the plea, Special Public Prosecutor B.N. Jagadish submitted that Ravi had allegedly intimidated police officers who had gone to serve him notice and accused him of behaving as though he were conducting a “kangaroo court.”

After hearing both sides, the High Court adjourned the matter to July 31 and directed the police not to initiate any coercive measures against Ravi until then.

The controversy arose after Ravi commented on protests over the alleged NEET examination paper leak, questioning the participation of “mullas” and making remarks that drew criticism from members of the Muslim community.

Following a complaint lodged by Mudassir Pasha, president of the Jamia Masjid Committee, Chikkamagaluru Town Police registered an FIR against the BJP leader.

Police had earlier issued Ravi two notices directing him to appear for questioning. Subsequently, the investigating officer and Chikkamagaluru Town Police Inspector Abhay Prakash visited Ravi’s residence and pasted a notice after he declined to accept it.

With the transfer of the case to the Special Court for elected representatives in Bengaluru, further proceedings will now continue before that court, while the High Court will take up Ravi’s petition again on July 31.
