Jharkhand protests: CID takes ex- JPSC chairman in custody over irregularities in exams
Ranchi: Amid student protests in Jharkhand of Ranchi over alleged irregularities in Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) examinations, the police took former JPSC chairman L Khiyangte in custody on Monday. He was taken in custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

According to a report published by News 18, he was taken in custody after seven hours of questioning. Appointed as JPSC chairman last year, he had resigned from the post following reports of irregularities in examinations. He had been questioned four times since July 28, before being taken in custody today.
“We have arrested former JPSC chairperson L Khiangte in connection with irregularities in recruitment examinations,” Additional Director General (CID), Manoj Kaushik, said while speaking to news agency PTI.
Three JPSC members stepped down earlier
Khiyangte was taken in custody a day after three JPSC members stepped down amid protests by aspirants over alleged irregularities in , which were conducted by the agency. With the latest arrest, the number of those taken in custody increased to 20.
He earlier resigned a day before search operations were conducted by the CID at multiple locations. Among the locations where search operations were conducted was his official residence. However, Khiangte claimed he decided to step down he “voluntarily” to ensure fair probe in the entire matter.
As per officials, Ajeeta Bhattacharya, the wife of JMM leader Supriyo Bhattacharya, was scheduled to be questioned on August 10. The CID is supposed to question Ahmad on August 12, and Hansda on August 14. All of them were earlier appointed as JPSC members in September 2021.
Khiyangte’s computer operator arrested earlier
Earlier, the police had arrested Khiyangte’s computer operator, Dharmendra, in connection with the case. The Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) MLA Jairam Kumar Mahato, has also urged the Jharkhand Police to cooperate with the protesting students.
