Jantar Mantar Loses Dharna Chowk Status; Three New Sites Announced

Following the advice of the Supreme Court asking the government to consider allocating alternative designated protest sites, the government on Monday de-notified Jantar Mantar as the designated protest site and allocated three different places: Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground.

This would now help the denizens of Delhi to have fewer traffic jams, as there would be no protests at Jantar Mantar. This has been welcomed by commuters, while some who support the opposition protests said that this was not the right step, though they could not explain why.

It may be recalled that the LoP Rahul Gandhi has also been asking the government to show alternate sites where they could protest if the government cannot permit them at Jantar Mantar.

Meanwhile, police have put up heavy barricades outside the Constitution Club in Delhi, from where the opposition bloc MPs would be marching to the Supreme Court.

There is a heavy traffic jam at Sikandra Road where the Himachal Bhavan is located. A large number of Congress workers from Himachal have gathered there, and some were seen making reels as well.

According to the Delhi Police, the decision was taken based on the recommendations of a Home Ministry committee.

According to the “Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, had constituted a Committee to examine alternative proper venues for citizens’ right for organising protest/demonstrations in place of the existing ‘designated site’,” read the official statement.

“Based on the Committee’s recommendations, Jantar Mantar as a protest venue has been de-notified,” it further read.

“Detailed and revised SOP for organising protest/demonstrations at these three venues will be issued separately. This is in partial modification of earlier Standing Order No. L&O/48/22 dated 28.04.2022,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Traffic Police has warned commuters of possible disruptions across New Delhi and central Delhi on Monday.

According to the police, restrictions or diversions may be imposed at around 30 locations to manage traffic and maintain security during the Opposition’s planned demonstration.

Several major roads and intersections are likely to be affected, including the Dhaula Kuan flyover, Jhandewalan, Patel Chowk, Panchkuian, Connaught Place, Mandi House, Lodhi Road flyover, Bhikaji Cama Place and Moti Bagh flyover.
