iPhone Duo Crackgate: Apple responds after users report display cracks along the hinge
Apple’s first foldable iPhone has run into trouble just days after reaching customers. Several iPhone Duo owners have reported cracks appearing on the inner display, particularly around the hinge where the phone folds. Some users claim their screens developed problems within hours of unboxing. The complaints have already earned the controversy a familiar nickname online, ‘Crackgate’.

Apple has now acknowledged the issue and confirmed that a small number of iPhone Duo units are affected. In a statement shared with 9to5Mac and MacRumors on October 26, the company said customers experiencing display problems should contact AppleCare for a replacement. The response comes just three days after the iPhone Duo went on sale on October 23.

What is happening with the iPhone Duo displays?
Reports started appearing on Reddit and MacRumors forums shortly after the phone’s launch. Owners shared photographs showing cracks near the folding hinge, often accompanied by bright lines running across one side of the inner screen.
One user in Australia claimed the display cracked after fewer than 20 folds. The owner reported feeling resistance near the hinge before hearing a cracking sound while opening the device.
Several complaints describe similar damage around the lower section of the folding display. Some affected customers have reportedly received replacement devices at Apple Stores.
What has Apple said about Crackgate?
In its official response, Apple acknowledged the problem and advised affected customers to seek replacements.
“We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement,” Apple said in its statement.
The company maintains that only a small number of devices are affected. It has not disclosed the exact number of faulty units or announced any changes to the phone’s design.
Why are iPhone Duo screens cracking?
Repair specialists at iFixit examined the iPhone Duo’s hinge using teardown footage, patents and CT scans.
Their analysis identified a possible problem involving a central support bar. If the bar fails to move out of the display’s path during folding, it could place extra pressure on a small section of the screen.
This remains a possible explanation. Apple has not confirmed the cause of the cracking.

What should affected iPhone Duo users do?
Apple has advised customers experiencing inner display problems to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
The company has yet to announce a wider recall or confirm whether future production units will receive any changes.
After being behind Samsung for over 8 generations, Apple faces complaints at a sensitive moment. The iPhone Duo marks its entry into the foldable smartphone market, where hinge reliability and screen durability have remained major concerns for manufacturers.
